Position: Laborer Grounds Maintenance
Location: West Point Cemetery
Job Summary:
The Laborer, Grounds Maintenance is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of cemetery grounds, ensuring a respectful, clean, and organized environment. This role includes performing landscaping, assisting with burials and funeral services, maintaining facilities and equipment, and supporting the overall operations of the cemetery.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Daily Operations:
*Open and close cemetery gates.
*Perform debris sweeps across cemetery grounds and facilities.
*Blow leaves and clean roads, sidewalks, and other high-traffic areas.
Landscaping and Grounds Maintenance:
*Mow, weed whack, edge, and blow leaves in assigned sections.
*Drag mat stone dust roads, repair gravel paths, and top and seed areas as needed.
*Weed and maintain mulch beds, flower beds, and landscaped areas.
*Operate and maintain sprinklers throughout the grounds.
*Thatch and aerate the turf to maintain healthy grass growth.
Burial and Funeral Assistance:
*Prepare and fill graves for full-body and cremation burials using cemeteryequipment.
*Set up and break down tents and other equipment for funeral services.
*Assist in relocating remains and handling direct placement burials.
Facilities and Equipment Maintenance:
*Clean restrooms, columbarium walls, and sidewalks.
*Maintain cemetery equipment, including mowers, sprinklers, and tools.
*Install and repair plates, headstones, and other memorial structures.
*Clean and treat headstones and monuments to preserve their condition.
General Cemetery Maintenance:
*Screen and repair stone dust roads and fix dirt piles.
* Perform detailed tasks such as topping and seeding headstones, and reinstallation of displaced memorials.
* Sift the dirt to remove large rocks and improve soil quality for landscaping and burial preparation.
* Assist with organizing soil and materials for future use.
Team Support:
* Attend weekly meetings to discuss assignments and priorities.
* Work collaboratively to ensure all tasks are completed in a timely and respectful manner.
Work Environment:
This position requires working outdoors in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and wind. The role is physically demanding, involving standing, walking, bending, and lifting heavy objects. Grounds Maintenance Laborers may interact with visitors and must maintain a respectful and professional demeanor at all times.
